Largs is approximately 45 minutes drive from both Glasgow and Prestwick airports.

There is an hourly train service from Largs to Glasgow and also regular buses from the town to Greenock, Paisley, Glasgow and Ayr.

There is also a local bus service which circles the town, taking in a stop at the supermarket and medical centre.

Ferries leave Largs slip every half an hour for the Isle of Cumbrae.


There are three primary schools in Largs, two with nurseries for 3-4 year olds.

Largs Academy (secondary school) is consistently near the top of the Scottish school league tables and receives very favourable reviews from inspectorates, parents and pupils alike.

Other nurseries and toddlers groups are also available

Medical and Dentists

Just two years old Brooksby Medical Centre has a large GP group as well as aligned services, such as podiatry, baby clinic etc.

There are three dental practices in Largs.

The nearest hospitals are -Inverclyde Royal Hospital in Greenock and Crosshouse Hospital outside Kilmarnock.

Largs also has a “First Responder” service whereby trained volunteers can administer first aid and help until professional medical help arrives.


For a small town Largs has a large range of churches covering Church of Scotland, Catholic, Episcopal, Evangelical, Baptist, Church of the Nazarene and United Free.

There is also a visiting Spiritualist church

Clubs and Societies

There are many clubs and societies from Bridge, Model Boats, Cine and Video to Operatic and many more. Full details are available in the Library or in the local paper.

Also Opportunities in Retirement run over 30 activities for the over 50’s at very good prices.

There is a Teenage Drop In Café offering computer games, pool, café and other activities such as guitar lessons.

There are of course, guides, brownies and scouts, cubs and boys and girls brigades, all with junior sections.


Largs has one large supermarket and a smaller express supermarket.

There are also many small individual outlets e.g. butcher, fishmonger, hardware as well as the usual range of shoe, fashion, cards and gifts etc.
