In 2002, a group of business people came together to try and improve the service provided for visitors and the tourist industry in the area. It was felt that the national T.I.C. was not in a prominent position and is only open for part of the year. AS part of The Largs Initiative,a committee was formed chaired by Lord Glasgow and in 2003 the rental of the present Bureau was taken and Largs & Millport Information Bureau was opened in June of that year.
The object of the Bureau was to support Hotels, Guest Houses and day attractions in the area and to provide a service for visitors all the year round.
Since the opening, we estimate that around 100,000 people have visited the Bureau for information and this does not include the numerous telephone enquiries taken each year. The Bureau is manned by volunteers and they all comment on the enjoyment of meeting so many interesting people not only from the U.K but also different parts of the world. During the winter, the Bureau is open from 11a.m. till 3p.m. and in summer from 10a.m till 4 p.m.
The service provided by the Bureau has grown over the years and now local people can obtain bus timetables and information provided by the local authority. Tickets for local events and Waverley Cruises are also sold in the Bureau.
We hope that one day, the national T.I.C. will provide an all year round service and then the volunteers can sit back and enjoy more free time in this delightful corner of Scotland. In the meantime, if you live locally and have some spare time, why not join our happy band working in the bureau by offering 2/3 hours per week? Whilst providing a service for the town and its visitors, you will find great enjoyment and satisfaction.
